We still consider that food monitoring should continue to be carried out on a national basis, remaining the responsibility of the national food-monitoring authorities. It is necessary, however, to ensure that standards are the same - and high - throughout Europe, on the one hand to assign the same priority to health protection throughout Europe and on the other to ensure fair competition.
